Tammy:
Welcome back to The Complete Guide to Wedding Photography for Couples Getting Married.
I’m your host, Tammy Blalock—an internationally awarded wedding photojournalist based in Texas, helping couples make smart, confident decisions that tell their story beautifully.
Today’s question is one I get all the time: Do you really need a second photographer at your wedding? Let’s break it down.
Tammy:
The short answer is: it depends.
A second photographer isn’t mandatory for every wedding, but in certain situations it can elevate your experience and your final gallery.
Here are five reasons to consider one.
Reason 1: Getting ready in separate locations
If you and your partner are in different places, one photographer can’t physically cover both stories.
A second shooter ensures both sets of pre-ceremony moments are documented.
Reason 2: Multiple angles
For key moments—walking down the aisle, reactions during vows, first dance—two perspectives create a cinematic, fuller narrative: one wide, one tight, emotion from both sides.
Reason 3: Large guest list
At 150+ guests, candids, connections, and reception energy multiply.
A second photographer helps cover more people and more moments without compromise.
Reason 4: A more complete story
While I’m handling portraits or details, my second can capture cocktail hour, hugs in the hallway, and those blink-and-you-miss-them interactions that make your gallery feel alive.
Reason 5: Backup during equipment failure
Here’s the truth no one loves to discuss—gear can fail.
In my 15 years, I’ve had camera failure twice during a ceremony.
With a second shooter, not a single important moment was lost.
A second photographer is creative and technical insurance.
Tammy:
When might you not need a second shooter?
Small elopements, one-location days, or when your priorities and budget lean elsewhere.
It’s about aligning your coverage with your vision, timeline, and guest count.
A good photographer will help you decide honestly.
